Do you need a DPIA under the DPDP Act?

Five questions read your Significant Data Fiduciary likelihood signals; your answers also fill a free DPIA starter document you can copy or download.

1. How many data principals do you process personal data of?
2. Do you process financial, health or biometric data?
3. Do you knowingly process children’s personal data?
4. Do you profile, score or track behaviour of data principals?
5. Do you use AI/ML or novel technologies on personal data?
Describe the processing (fills your DPIA starter)

How SDF designation works

What triggers SDF status

The Central Government notifies Significant Data Fiduciaries under section 10, weighing factors including the volume and sensitivity of personal data and risk to data principals. Designation is theirs — preparation is yours.

What SDF status brings

A Data Protection Officer based in India, data protection impact assessments, and an independent data audit. All three take longer to build than to list.

Why screen before you are told

A DPIA done on your own schedule is a planning tool; one demanded after designation is a fire drill. The phased rollout (substantive duties from May 2027) is the time to choose which one you get.
